Maternity Photography: The Scheduling Guide
Capturing the magic of pregnancy is a once-in-a-lifetime (or a few-times-in-a-lifetime) experience. You want that perfect "bump" shape—prominent enough to be the star of the show, but not so late that you feel like a stranded whale or risk going into labor mid-pose.
While the general rule of thumb is between 28 and 36 weeks, the "sweet spot" shifts depending on your unique pregnancy journey.
1. The First-Time Mom
For your first pregnancy, your abdominal muscles are often a bit tighter, and the bump tends to take its time making a grand appearance.
The Best Time: 30 to 34 weeks.
Why: By week 30, your belly has a lovely, defined roundness. You’ll likely still have the energy to navigate a park or beach for an hour, and you aren’t yet dealing with the heavy "dropping" or intense swelling that often strikes in the final month.
Pro Tip: If you’re feeling particularly energetic and want to avoid the "third-trimester exhaustion," aim for the earlier side (week 30).
2. The Mom of Multiples
If you’re carrying twins, triplets, or more, your timeline moves up significantly. Your body is doing double (or triple!) the work, and your bump will reach "full-term" size much faster.
The Best Time: 24 to 28 weeks.
Why: Moms of multiples are at a higher risk for early delivery or bed rest. Beyond 28 weeks, the physical strain of carrying more than one baby can make standing and posing for photos genuinely uncomfortable.
Pro Tip: Don't wait! With multiples, the "sweet spot" is much narrower. Prioritize booking between weeks 24 and 26 while you can still move comfortably and before the babies decide to make an early debut.
3. Subsequent Pregnancies
If this isn't your first rodeo, your body remembers what to do. Most moms find they "pop" much earlier with their second or third child.
The Best Time: 28 to 32 weeks.
Why: Since your muscles have been here before, that bump will look photo-ready sooner. You might also find yourself tiring more easily since you’re likely chasing a toddler while growing a human!
Pro Tip: Early scheduling is key when big siblings are involved. By booking around week 28, you’ll have more flexibility and energy to interact, play, and capture those sweet "older sibling" moments without feeling physically overextended.
Quick Tips for a Stress-Free Shoot
Book Early: Aim to have your photographer secured by your second trimester. The best ones fill up fast! :)
Hydrate: Drink plenty of water the week leading up to the shoot to keep your skin glowing and reduce bloating.
Inspo: Have a vision in mind? Let your photographer know in advance so that they can bring it to life and there's no disappointments!
From One Momma to Another:
I know firsthand that as your body changes, it’s easy to feel a little self-conscious. But that "glow" everyone talks about? It is so real, and it deserves to be documented. While the typical window for maternity portraits is between 28 and 36 weeks, the "sweet spot" is entirely yours. There are no rigid rules—my priority is that you feel comfortable and confident. When your bump feels beautifully prominent and you feel ready to step in front of the lens, that is the perfect time to book.
I look forward to welcoming you into the studio soon.

Maddy
