Making a Mess: How to Prepare for Your Little One’s Cake Smash

So, your baby is turning one! It’s a huge milestone—you’ve survived the first year of sleepless nights, first steps, and endless diapers. Now, it’s time to celebrate with the most adorable tradition in photography: the Cake Smash.

As a photographer, I’ve seen it all—from babies who dive face-first into the frosting to those who refuse to touch a single crumb. While the unpredictability is part of the fun, a little preparation goes a long way in ensuring we get those "wall-worthy" shots.

Here are my top tips for a stress-free, cake-covered success.

1. The "Trial Run" is Essential

Believe it or not, many babies don’t actually like the texture of cake or frosting. To a one-year-old, that sticky, cold sensation can be overwhelming.

Pro Tip: A week before the session, give your baby a cupcake. Let them play with it, feel the frosting, and taste the sugar. This helps desensitize them to the texture so they aren't surprised (or scared) during the shoot.

2. Time it Around the Nap

A "hangry" or tired baby is the enemy of a happy photo session.

Pro Tip: We want your little one at their peak energy. Always schedule the session immediately following their morning or afternoon nap. Make sure they have a small, healthy snack before the shoot so they aren't cranky, but are still hungry enough to be interested in the cake.

3. Choose the Right Cake

Not all cakes are created equal in the eyes of the camera.

Color Matters: Avoid chocolate cake (it can look like... well, something else on camera) and red frosting (which can look like blood). Stick to light-coloured sponges and pastel or bright frosting.

Pro Tip: If you’re bringing your own cake, take it out of the fridge at least 2 hours before the shoot. We want it at room temperature - hard, cold frosting is difficult for little hands to break into.

4. Bring the "Secret Weapons"

Sometimes a baby needs a little encouragement to start "smashing."

Pro Tip: Bring a bag of their favourite small snacks (like Cheerios or Puffs). If they aren't interested in the cake, we can hide a few snacks inside the frosting. When they reach for the snack, it looks like they are digging into the cake!

5. Follow the Leader (That's You!)

Your baby looks to you for cues. If you’re stressed or hovering, they’ll feel it.

Pro Tip: Get ready to be silly! We’ll need you behind me, making funny faces and singing their favourite songs. If they get stuck, you might even need to take a bite of the cake yourself to show them it’s okay!  Bring a change of clothes, and a small towel for the baby and yourself—trust me, you will get frosting on you during the exit strategy.

Real Talk: What if They Cry?

Here is a little secret from behind the lens: sometimes, babies just aren’t into it. Despite the bright colours and the sweet frosting, the new environment, the big camera, and that giant sugary mountain can feel a bit overwhelming for a one-year-old. If your little one bursts into tears instead of diving into the cake, take a deep breath—it is completely okay.

In fact, the "crying smash" photos are often some of the most cherished images in a gallery - I promise you! They capture a real, honest moment of toddlerhood that you’ll laugh about years from now.  The goal isn't a "perfect" baby; it's a perfect memory of exactly who they are at age ONE—feelings and all!
