Tiny Toes, Big Memories: Preparing for Your Newborn Photo Shoot

The anticipation of your newborn's arrival is a whirlwind of excitement and preparation. Among the countless to-dos, scheduling a newborn photo shoot is a beautiful way to capture those fleeting, precious early days. But how do you prepare for this special occasion, ensuring a smooth and memorable experience? I'm here to help make this experience as seamless and enjoyable as possible!

1. Timing is Everything:

  • Book Early: For best availability, it's ideal to book your newborn session in your second trimester. I'll reserve your due date, and then, once your baby makes their grand entrance, we'll confirm the perfect date. Newborns are most easily posed and photographed within the first two weeks, when they are naturally sleepy and flexible.

2. Choosing the Right Photographer:

  • Style Matters: Are you drawn to posed, natural, or lifestyle photography? Browse my portfolio and website to see if my style is a good fit. If you'd like a comprehensive overview of my 2025 packages, including pricing and details, please send me a DM or email, and I'll send over my Client Guide.
  • Experience Counts: With two little ones of my own and specialized training from three leading Canadian newborn experts, I offer a wealth of experience and a truly safe, comforting environment for your baby.
  • Safety First: Having welcomed a baby during the 2020 pandemic, I maintain the highest standards of safety and cleanliness. Your newborn's well-being is my top priority, with careful handling and strict hygiene protocols in place.

3. Preparing Your Little Star:

  • A Well-Fed Baby is a Happy Baby: Feed your baby right before the shoot. A full tummy helps them sleep soundly.
  • Keep Baby Awake Beforehand (Slightly): A little bit of awake time before the feeding will help them sleep even more deeply once fed.
  • Loose-Fitting Clothing: Dress your baby in loose-fitting clothing to avoid marks on their delicate skin. A front-zippered onesie is the most practical choice for our session. It allows for quick and easy removal, minimizing the risk of disturbing your sleeping baby.
  • Relax and Stay Calm: Babies sense your energy. A calm and relaxed environment will help them stay calm too.

4. What to Bring:

  • Extra Diapers and Wipes: Accidents happen! Be prepared.
  • Pacifier (Even if you rarely use one): It can be a lifesaver for soothing during the shoot.
  • Extra Formula/Breast Milk: If you're formula-feeding or expressing, bring extra.
  • A Blanket or Two: For warmth and comfort.
  • Any Sentimental Items: If you have special blankets, toys, or outfits you want included, bring them along.
  • Snacks and Drinks for Parents: Newborn shoots can take a while - pack snacks for yourselves and toddlers...especially if you're a breastfeeding momma!

Note: Our studio has a back up of all items listed above in the event you forget to bring your own or supply runs low. Don't worry momma, I got you!

5. Preparing Your Home (For in-home lifestyle shoots):

  • Warmth is Essential: Newborns get cold easily. Crank up the heat a bit to keep them comfortable.
  • Declutter the Space: Clear the area where the shoot will take place to create a clean and simple backdrop.
  • Natural Light is Your Friend: Open curtains and blinds to maximize natural light.

6. What to Expect During the Shoot:

  • Patience is Paramount: Newborn shoots require patience. Be prepared for breaks for feeding, diaper changes, and soothing.
  • Trust Your Photographer: Babies will cry and get fussy during their shoot - it's normal! Relax and allow me to soothe baby! After going through my different techniques and baby is still restless, I will hand baby back to momma for some cuddles.
  • Enjoy the Moment: These moments are fleeting. Take a deep breath and enjoy the experience. Take a nap if needed too ... you and your baby are in good hands!

7. Post-Shoot:

  • Photo Selection: 24 - 48 hours after your shoot, I will provide you with a gallery of images to choose from. Once you have made your selection, I'll have your edited photos turned around in about 1-2 weeks.

A newborn photo shoot is a beautiful investment in capturing the magic of those early days. By preparing thoughtfully, you can ensure a relaxed and enjoyable experience, resulting in cherished memories that will last a lifetime.

Excited to work with you and capture the newborn shoot of your dreams!

xoxo
