Midwife vs. OBGYN: Understanding Your Options for a Healthy Birth
Welcoming a baby into the world is an incredible journey and picking your healthcare team is a huge first step. While many of us automatically think of an OBGYN, more people are now choosing a midwife.
I've had a baby with both and I can say they're both great choices, but their approaches are very different. Knowing these differences can help you decide what's right for you and your baby.
For my son, I had chosen an OBGYN. It was the path I knew and I found comfort in having medical care available if I needed it. I never even considered a midwife at the time—my sisters used the same OBGYN, so naturally I just followed what felt familiar. When my second baby was on the way, I felt more confident and wanted to take control of my birth plan. I did a ton of research, watched videos, and ultimately decided to go with a midwife. The two experiences were so different and while I loved both, my time with a midwife was truly something special.
Here’s a look at the key differences I experienced.
The Midwife Path: A Natural and Personal Approach
I received care from the incredible midwives at Sage-Femme Rouge Valley Midwives and was lucky enough to have the same midwives care for me straight into delivery and postpartum. My midwives saw birth as a natural, healthy process - not a medical condition. Their approach was focused on me and it came with some wonderful benefits:
More Time and Personal Attention: My midwives had fewer clients, which meant they could dedicate more time to me. I saw the same two people at every appointment, which built a strong sense of trust.
Empowering Me with Knowledge: A big part of their care was education. They took the time to explain everything—from why certain tests are done to what my options were for pain relief. They wanted me to feel confident and in control of my birth journey.
A Focus on Lower Intervention: My midwives were skilled at helping labor progress naturally. This meant there was less need for interventions. I decided to go with an epidural and my midwives didn't try to sway me one way or another, rather they respected my journey. They prioritized skin-to-skin immediately after birth and delayed cord cutting, both which are incredibly beneficial for the baby's health.
Round-the-Clock Support: My midwives were just a text or call away, day or night. This constant availability for questions—from early pregnancy to postpartum concerns—was a huge comfort. They even came to the hospital to meet me when I was in labor and stayed with me until I was settled into the recovery room. They truly felt like a member of my family.
Care That Comes to You: My midwives did home visits for postpartum check-ups. Having my baby during the winter meant it was flu season, and being able to stay home was a huge relief.
The OBGYN's Path: A Focus on Medical Expertise
My OBGYN was a medical doctor specializing in all aspects of pregnancy and childbirth, she actually delivered all the babies in my family and her proven track record gave me the comfort I needed as a first time momma. Her approach was centered on my health, medical safety, intervention when needed and came with these benefits:
Expertise for High-Risk Pregnancies: An OBGYN has the medical training to handle any complications that may arise.
Prepared for Emergencies: They are specialists in surgical procedures like C-sections and are ready to act in an emergency to keep me and my baby safe.
Hospital-Based Care: OBGYNs work within a hospital setting, giving you immediate access to medical technology and a full team of specialists.
What was my preference?
I absolutely loved my midwife experience and cannot recommend it enough. For first-time moms especially, I think this type of care is so beneficial. We have so many questions and unknowns, and the amount of education I received was mind-blowing, even as a second-time mom! The best thing is that you don't always have to choose one over the other. My midwives worked closely with OBGYNs at the hospital. They were open from the very beginning, willing to transfer my care immediately if needed. This meant I got the personal support of a midwife with the security of a doctor ready to step in if anything went wrong.
The goal is always a safe and positive birth experience and for me, my midwife experience provided both in the most incredible way.
